People with disabilities are the largest minority group anyone can join at any time and due to accidents and old age eventually do. Disability affects the lives of everyone at some point in their life – it is time society changed to acknowledge this.

Disability Statistics

Some people are born with a disability, others become disabled due to an illness or injury, and some develop them as they age. Disability is a subject you may not think of as something that may happen to you. However, your chances of becoming disabled are greater than you realize. Today, more people live with disabilities due to our aging societies and improved medical treatment. No one is excluded from joining the largest minority group. In fact, during life, almost all of us will have some type of disability including famous people, celebrities, and world leaders.

What is a Disability?

A disability is defined as a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual or group. The term is used to refer to individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment mental illness, and various types of chronic disease.

Disability is conceptualized as being a multidimensional experience for the person involved. There may be effects on organs or body parts, and there may be effects on a person’s participation in areas of life. Correspondingly, three dimensions of disability are recognized in ICF:

  • Body structure and function (and impairment thereof)
  • Activity (and activity restrictions)
  • Participation (and participation restrictions)

The classification also recognizes the role of physical and social environmental factors in affecting disability outcomes. Disabilities can impact people in different ways, even when one person has the same type of disability as another person. Some disabilities may be hidden, known as invisible disability.
